Hand puppets, Paul Klee

Hand puppets, Paul Klee

A short movie in virtual reality 12 times awared, giving life to Paul Klee's hand puppets to relate the story of their famous creator. It is the fourth episode of the Unframed series dedicated to the discovery of the masterpieces of Swiss painters.

This episode is born out of the will to take on our own the production of the Unframed series, which was until then produced by Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS). So it’s in co-production with Gregory Catella from SSR SRG and Yves Demay from RTS, and with the support of Loterie Romande and the Cinéforom foundation, that we chose to reproduce Paul Klee’s hand puppet.

Thanks to the Paul Klee Zentrum, we had the incredible opportunity to take pictures of the real puppets from every angle so we could then reproduce them with the highest fidelity and at scale. We also greatly benefited from their scientific help, by proof-reading our script, giving us corrections and tips. They also came out with a lot of anecdotes unknown to most and now figuring in the movie.

At last, in keepinf with Paul Klee’s love of puppet theatres, Martin Charrière animated every puppet by hand directly into the virtual reality, which gives a unique “hand-crafted” feeling to the short movie.

Project’s impact

A great success in festivals

“Hand puppets, Paul Klee” toured in VR festivals all over the world. It was selected more than 30 times and has won a total of 12 different awards, including the prestigious “Golden Mask” at the NewImages Festival 2022 in Paris.

…that is not stopping !

Even if “Hand puppets, Paul Klee” cannot run in festival selection, it keeps being regularly shown. Thanks to the GIFF (Geneva International Film Festival) and their VR-mobile bus project, we had the chance to be featured in the Locarno Film Festival 2024. This episode was also screened during festivals such as Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFAN 2024) in Korea, or the Kaoshiung Festival 2024 in Taïwan.

Translated in Mandarin

It was for the latter, and with the invaluable help of Ellen Kuo, currently in charge of the XR Market at the NewImages Festival, that we were able to hava the film translated into Mandarin!
