Datak

A serious game for prevention to young people about Big Data. A gamified summary of 18 months of journalistic investigation about the use of our personal data online. Since its release, the game received several awards and has been played by more than 150'000 players.

In September 2015, the RTS approached us with the need to find a way to summarise a massive 18-months journalistic investigation about Big Data. The informations were first broadcasted on the RTS website through an information feed.

The serious game Datak was created to help young people understand how, where and by whom their personal data are used, and helped them be aware of the impact of their decisions online. In this game, the player gains experience through their decisions about personal data. Will those decisions benefit to Dataville and the personal life of their habitants? The player will have to decide.

The game is packed with information and interactive contents. In addition to the files to be dealt with and the numerous hidden challenges, the player discovers YouTubers’ videos such as le Grand JD, mini-games, fake calls, integration of social media and many other surprises… The game includes a pedagogical guide and is used in Swiss and French classrooms.

Since its release in 2015, Datak received several awards, including the International Educational Games Competition (IEGC). More than 150’000 unique players have been registered. The game was updated a few times in order to stay in line with the latest trends and information on personal data.

You think you might be an expert in personal data? Try and play a game, you might be surprised!
